The fibula was used to secure garments in ancient times.
The fibulas served much the same purpose as a safety pin does in modern times. It high loop reflects the type of garment it was used to secure. Often a gathering of material was worn over one shoulder and to hold it in place the fibula was used. They were made of various materials. The least expensive were bronze, and more expensive were those made of silver of even gold. They were decorated, some very handsomely and were akin to a piece of fine jewelry.
